His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, declared 2018 to be the Year of Zayed to mark 100 years since the birth of the UAE’s founding father.

The aim of the nationwide initiative is to highlight the leader’s role in establishing the UAE Federation, and his local, regional and international achievements.

The Year of Zayed is a local and international initiative designed to create greater awareness about the life, legacy and values of of the late Sheikh Zayed, to help raise his profile to that of one of the world’s most inspirational figures, to reinforce his status as a source of national pride, and to honour his legacy through projects and initiatives that are consistent with his vision and values.

The Founder’s Memorial opens in 2018 to coincide with the Year of Zayed initiative, establishing a permanent national tribute to the nation’s founding father. The vision and mission of the space are closely aligned with the objectives of the Year of Zayed, creating a place of reflection, celebration and gathering that instils pride and purpose in the UAE community and enables international visitors to learn more about Sheikh Zayed, the man, the pioneer, the champion of human development and the founder of a nation.
